F2: The prelude to Formula 1 arrives at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico by 2027

Formula 2 is considered the last step for young drivers before reaching the highest category of motorsport.

Mexico has become one of the most important venues in world motorsport, and with the arrival of Formula 2 as part of the support categories of the Mexican Grand Prix, its presence is reaffirmed.

This incorporation is especially important because currently the Formula 2 grid has a pair of Mexican drivers who have had quite outstanding weekends last season: Rafael Villagómez and Noel León.

Mexico opens the doors to the Formula 2 championship

As part of the on-track activities of the Mexican Grand Prix, Formula 2 will be part of the weekend offer from October 29 to 31, 2027, allowing fans to enjoy two more races, one long and one short.

So far it has been announced that this category will be agreed until the 2028 season, however, it is expected that, like the F1 race, an extension will be negotiated and that in this way the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will be part of the usual calendar.

Bruno Michel, CEO of Formula 2, revealed that the arrival of this category on Mexican soil was only a matter of time, since the response of the national public has been as expected when talking about motorsports:

“The addition of Mexico City to our FIA Formula 2 calendar will bring the category closer to new audiences and strengthen its position as a global platform for the next generation of Formula 1 talent.”

For his part, Federico González Compeán, director of the Mexico City Grand Prix, assured that the arrival of F2 to Mexico not only represents an opportunity for the fans to enjoy the action on the track, but also for local drivers to race before “their people.”

León and Villagómez, the local heroes beyond ‘Checo Pérez’

Although ‘Checo’ Pérez is still active in the highest category of motorsports, enjoying his first season with Cadillac, the Mexican has mentioned that his final retirement is near, so the presence of young promises such as Rafael Villagómez and Noel Léon in the so-called “anteroom of F1”, reinforces the idea that national motorsports will continue to have representatives up to the task.

Rafael Villagómez has so far collected a total of five podiums in F2, including three in 2026, two of them obtained at the iconic Silverstone circuit during the same weekend.

For his part, Noel León has already achieved a total of three victories this season at dream tracks such as Montreal, Monaco and Budapest. After these results, the Mexican is considered one of the strongest contenders to win the drivers’ championship.

Flyers such as the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Franco Colapinto, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Sergio Pérez himself, once raced for Formula 2 before reaching the pinnacle of motorsport.
