This Tuesday, Argentine Cristian ‘Kily’ González became the new coach of Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team in which Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul, Luis Suárez and Casemiro play.
‘Las Garzas’ made the arrival of the Rosario coach official after confirming the validation of the visa necessary to work in the United States. The agreement contemplates his stay at the club until June 2028.
At 52 years old, González will thus face his fourth experience as a coach after directing Rosario Central, Unión de Santa Fe and Platense. His arrival occurs at a time of maximum demand for the Miami team, which has had three coaches on the bench this season.
“Ready to work. Welcome to Miami, Cristian ‘Kily’ González,” Inter Miami published on its official X account along with a photograph of the new coach wearing the team’s training attire.
Immediate debut against Cruz Azul
‘Kily’ González will have very little time to prepare his premiere. This Wednesday he will direct his first game in charge of Inter Miami against Cruz Azul, in the Campeones Cup.
The match will be played at the Nu Stadium in Miami starting at 8:00 p.m. local time (00:00 GMT on Thursday) and will pit the MLS champion against the winner of the Liga MX Champion of Champions.
González already led his first training session with the squad this Tuesday and will have to quickly take on the challenge of trying to change the dynamics of a team that is going through a difficult time.
An extensive career as a footballer
Before becoming a coach, ‘Kily’ González built an outstanding career as a footballer. The man from Rosario played for teams such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, Real Zaragoza, Valencia and Inter Milan, in addition to defending the Argentine national team shirt.
With Argentina he won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. In Spain, with Valencia, he won a League and a Super Cup, while during his time at Inter Milan he won a League, two Italian Cups and a Super Cup.
His coaching career began at Rosario Central, where he led the reserve team before being promoted to the first team. He led the Rosario team for 68 games between 2020 and 2022.
Subsequently, he took over at Unión de Santa Fe, a team he coached in 78 games between 2023 and 2025. In the last campaign he was in charge of Platense.
Now, ‘Kily’ González will have the biggest challenge of his career as a coach: leading Messi’s Inter Miami in the MLS and in the international competitions that the American team faces.
