The Spanish driver will race for the first time in Madrid, the city where he was born and which is opening as the venue for this season’s Spanish GP.
This weekend the top category of motorsport continues with the European tour, making a stop in Madrid for the first Spanish Grand Prix on the enigmatic Madring circuit, a track that debuts on the calendar in 2026.
For this event, Carlos Sainz arrives at the Madring Circuit as an ambassador, exciting the fans who have shared with the wheel in different events that have been held as part of the race weekend.
Spanish GP 2026: A bittersweet date for Carlos Sainz and Williams
Although this weekend represents a dream come true for Sainz by having the opportunity to race at home for the first time, it also puts him face to face with the reality he is experiencing with Williams, a team that at the moment can only aspire to modest results in the middle zone, and that will have to overcome the challenges that a new layout entails.
After the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, Williams remains in ninth position in the constructors’ championship with a total of 11 points, very far from the results in terms of pace and reliability of those reported in 2025.
Despite the panorama that still seems reserved for this weekend, Carlos Sainz has assured that his intervention with Williams at the Madring will be everything that fans expect, as he will leave everything on the track.
So far and before the first free practice session, Sainz is the only driver who has been able to complete a full lap of the Madring, a track that has a length of 5,416 km and a total of 22 corners, 12 on the right and 10 more on the left. A maximum speed of up to 340 km/h can be expected.
Madring Circuit, the dream that Sainz wants to conquer with Williams
Sainz is realistic about where he is with the British team this year in Madrid; However, he assures that for the 2027 season he will seek to return to his ‘home race’ with a competitive car that will allow him to fight for a result that makes him feel proud:
“I will work very hard so that this is the last year that I come to Madrid without the possibility of fighting for something important… it will be an appetizer of what Madrid is, to prepare me when I have a more competitive package next year and, hopefully, in the following years, I can offer the fans a better result” Carlos Sainz via Car and Driver
Williams’ next update package is expected to be ready for the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which will be held at the end of September.
