The UEFA Disciplinary Committee opened a file against Olympique Lyon and Fenerbahçe for the incidents recorded during and after the second leg of the Champions League play-off, played this week and which ended with a 1-2 victory for the Turkish team.
The match concluded with a confrontation between players and members of the coaching staff of both teams on the field of play. Tension increased after the celebratory gestures made by Mateo Guendouzi, a Fenerbahçe footballer with a past at Olympique de Marseille.
During the warm-up, Guendouzi had also made offensive gestures towards the stands, which provoked a reaction from the fans, who greeted him with whistles.
The situation worsened at the end of the match, when a spectator jumped onto the field while Guendouzi was heading towards the locker room and attacked him. Several Fenerbahçe players intervened against the fan, while objects were thrown onto the pitch from the stands.
UEFA will investigate the incidents
The disciplinary charges opened by UEFA against Lyon and Fenerbahçe are related to the lighting of flares, the throwing of objects and incidents involving the public.
In addition to these files, the European body has appointed Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors to specifically investigate the confrontation that occurred on the pitch, in which footballers and members of the staff of both clubs participated.
UEFA will now determine possible sanctions after analyzing match reports and evidence related to the incidents.
Fenerbahçe won the second leg 1-2 and managed to advance in the Champions League, although the duel was marked by episodes of tension recorded on and off the field of play.
