Formula 1 returns with the Netherlands GP and a red-hot World Cup

Formula 1 returns this weekend after almost a month of summer break with the Grand Prix of Netherlandstwelfth round of the season and turning point in the fight for the championship. The Zandvoort circuit will be the scene of a test that will distribute up to 33 points due to the presence of a sprint race.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives as the outstanding leader of the World Championship with 219 points, 50 more than Lewis Hamilton and 59 above his Mercedes teammate, George Russell. The young Italian driver has won six of the eleven races held, including five consecutively, and is emerging as the main favorite to win his first Formula 1 championship.

Antonelli looks to extend his lead in Zandvoort

Despite his dominance in the main races, Antonelli still has a score to settle in the sprint format. The Italian has only managed to win one of the four short races held this season, so his rivals will have a new opportunity to close the gap in the standings.

Lewis Hamilton will be one of the main candidates to take advantage of any setback by the leader. The seven-time world champion occupies second position and has regained sensations in his second year with Ferrari. Although he has only won in Catalonia, he has accumulated four other podiums and has scored points in all the championship events.

George Russell also has options to fight for the title. The Briton has achieved victories in Australia and Austria, in addition to winning the sprint races in China and Canada. However, the withdrawals from Canada and Belgium and a discreet twelfth place in Monaco slowed his progress when he was going through his best moment of the season.

Behind the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris are the other two drivers who have managed to win a long race this year. The Monegasque occupies fourth position, while the current champion is fifth and will seek to reduce a disadvantage that could begin to be decisive in the second half of the championship.

Max Verstappen, sixth, 110 points behind Antonelli, arrives at his home Grand Prix with the need to react. The Dutchman has not yet won this season and will seek to return to the top of the podium in Zandvoort, where he has not achieved victory since 2023. In addition, he will face the race with Liam Lawson as a partner, due to Isack Hadjar’s absence due to injury.

With the championship entering its second half, the Dutch GP appears as a key opportunity for Antonelli’s pursuers to reduce the gap and keep the title fight open. If the Italian imposes his pace again, his advantage could begin to become an increasingly difficult wall to climb.
