Democrats assure that the party’s electoral drought in Florida “is over”

MIAMI.– The president of the Florida Democratic Party, Nikki Fried, affirmed on Monday that this political party left behind years of state setbacks, after snatching more than 30 seats from 2024 and taking advantage in vote-by-mail requests for the November elections.

During a news conference, she said Democrats are prepared to reverse a series of recent setbacks in this year’s election cycle, a sign of renewed optimism in a party that has struggled to compete statewide in recent years.

Fried assured that influential figures at the national level invest in their efforts and that the territorial work is beginning to bear fruit.

Eighteen months of victories

“Since 2024, Democrats have taken more than 30 seats statewide. That represents 18 months of consistent victories in districts that look nothing alike,” Fried declared.

The president stressed that the party “wins throughout Florida” thanks to an increase in volunteers, contacts with voters and people who want to run for public office under the Democratic label.

Fried framed that balance within a broader goal for the midterm elections. “The Republican supermajority in this legislature can be broken, and we are going to break it in this cycle,” he stated during the appearance.

He also considered that recent results in special elections offer “proof of concept” that the party’s organizational model works, even in districts that President Donald Trump previously won.

National investment and advantage in voting by mail

Fried noted that Democrats currently lead Republicans by 138,000 vote-by-mail requests, an indicator with which the party had difficulty in recent election cycles.

He also highlighted a $20 million injection from the House Majority PAC, focused on congressional districts where the Republican advantage shrank after redistricting.

According to that political action committee, its advertising and digital purchases include $9 million in Miami, with $2.3 million reserved for Spanish-language ads, as well as $6.6 million in Tampa and $3.9 million in Orlando.

The distribution of spending reflects the party’s commitment to metropolitan areas with the highest concentration of Hispanic voters.

The Voter Registration Obstacle

Despite the optimism, the party faces a structural challenge in the electoral roll. Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 1.5 million registered voters, with 5.5 million registered versus 4 million, plus 3.3 million with no party affiliation.

Since 2025, Republicans have added about 33,000 voters, while Democrats have lost about 17,000. The deadline to register for the August primaries expires on July 20.

Fried remains the last Democrat to win statewide office in Florida, narrowly winning the 2018 Agriculture Committee race.

The November calendar includes races for governor, a federal Senate seat and newly redrawn congressional districts.
