From failure at Milan to the challenge of Naples: Allegri returns to the bench

Massimiliano Allegri was announced this Friday as the new coach of the Naplesjust a few weeks after being fired from AC Milan. The 58-year-old Italian coach signed a three-year contract to succeed Antonio Conte, who left the club after two seasons at the helm.

Although Allegri is one of the most successful coaches in Italian football, with five Serie A titles and two Champions League finals with Juventus, as well as a Scudetto with Milan, he arrives at Naples after a disappointing season. The Rossonero team finished fifth in Serie A and was left out of the next Champions League, a failure that led to his dismissal along with several members of the sports management.

In his new challenge he will find a team consolidated by Antonio Conte and led on the field by Scott McTominay. Napoli is going through one of the best cycles in its recent history, with two Serie A titles (2023 and 2025) and an Italian Super Cup (2025), so Allegri’s main challenge will be to keep the club among the candidates for the title.

The arrival of the coach also opens a new chapter in a Serie A marked by numerous changes on the bench. While Conte appears as one of the main candidates to take over the Italian team, Allegri will have to adapt to the demanding environment of the Neapolitan club and coexistence with president Aurelio De Laurentiis, known for his strong character. In addition to Naples, other important teams such as Milan, Atalanta, Lazio and Fiorentina will also have a new coach for next season.
