Floyd Mayweather faces charges for alleged $200,000 check fraud in Las Vegas

Former world boxing champion Floyd Mayweather faces two felony charges in Las Vegas after being accused of writing a bad check for $200,000 to purchase a watch at a luxury goods store.

According to court documents from Clark County, Nevada, Mayweather was charged in April with theft and issuing a bad check with intent to defraud. Authorities maintain that the former boxer carried out the operation in December 2024 using a check from Wells Fargo destined for the luxury resale store Gold and Beyond, even though his account did not have sufficient funds.

Mayweather, 49, was scheduled for an initial appearance this Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court. However, he did not attend in person and was represented by an attorney, according to information from the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office. The next hearing in the case was scheduled for September.

So far, neither the former world champion’s lawyer nor representatives have issued public statements regarding the accusations.

More legal problems for Mayweather

The charges in Nevada add to a series of legal disputes involving the former boxer in different states of the United States.

Earlier this year, Mayweather was sued in New York for allegedly failing to pay rent on a Manhattan apartment. In addition, he has had financial conflicts with several jewelers and filed a lawsuit against his former business manager, alleging a fraud scheme that spanned several years.

Return to boxing amid controversy

The accusations come at a time when Mayweather had announced his return to competitive activity.

The former five-division world champion reported earlier this year that he would come out of retirement to return to the ring during the summer. His return is scheduled for June 27 in Athens, Greece, where he will participate in the event called “Battle of the Legends.”

In April, Mayweather himself confirmed his presence at the event, which would mark his return to fighting amid growing media attention for his problems outside the ring.

Considered one of the most successful boxers of all time, Mayweather built a storied career with an undefeated record and world titles in multiple weight classes. Now, however, his name is once again making headlines for a battle that he will have to fight away from the gloves and inside the courts.
