US Secretary of Security: Restoration of democracy in Venezuela will normalize relations

CARACASThe normalization of relations between the United States and Venezuela will depend on the restoration of democracy in the South American country, as stated by the US Secretary of Security, Markwayne Mullinwho takes office on March 31.

The official highlighted that for President Donald Trump the priority is to guarantee free elections in the country.

“We are working hard to normalize relations with Venezuela, but we also want to make sure that they have free elections and that they can become a democracy again,” Mullin said. “We are working hard to normalize relations with Venezuela, but we also want to make sure that they have free elections and that they can become a democracy again,” Mullin said.

Since last January 3, when US military forces captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are now in a Brooklyn prison, the three-phase plan for the recovery of the nation emerged. The execution of that plan is in the hands of Marco Rubio, Secretary of State. The first stage is stabilization, the second, economic recovery and the last, democratic transition. It is in this sphere that the electoral process that still has no date would be inserted.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has dealt with Delcy Rodríguez, acting president, who has so far carried out the mandates of the American president. For now, an oil opening has already been declared, the basis of which is the new Hydrocarbons Law promulgated at the end of January.

And in what has been called the “new political moment” the release of political prisoners has been half completed and now, in the Venezuelan Parliament, a new Mining Law has begun to be debated to allow US companies to invest and exploit strategic resources.

The new secretary also stressed that the flow of capital must benefit Venezuelan citizens and not “drug cartels or corruption.” In this context, he emphasized the need to link the economies of both countries to benefit both the infrastructure and the citizens of Venezuela.

In relation to the situation of political prisoners, he assured that the United States will continue to pressure to achieve the release of all of them.

“We do not want bad people or criminals to be released, but we do want those who were simply arrested, but those who were arrested simply for opposing harder and were sent to prisons to rot there. We want them to be reunited with their families, we are working on customs,” he said.
