Washington.- The president of the United States, donald trumpannounced this Thursday that the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Kristi Noem, will leave office effective March 31, 2026, while the agency remains closed due to lack of funds.
She will be replaced as of March 31 by the Republican senator from Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin (a former mixed martial arts fighter who won a seat in the Senate in 2023), the US president said in a message on his network, Truth Social.
“For ten years in the United States House of Representatives and three in the Senate, Markwayne has done a tremendous job representing the wonderful people of Oklahoma, where I won 77 of 77 counties, in 2016, 2020 and 2024,” Trump said in his message.
The president defined Mullin as a “warrior” of the MAGA movement, the ideological backbone of Trumpism, and assured that “he has the necessary wisdom and courage” to advance the “America First” agenda.
“As the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne is a fantastic advocate for our incredible tribal communities,” he said, adding that he will work to keep the borders “secure” and “stop the crime of migrants, murderers and other criminals who enter illegally” into the United States, as well as “end the scourge of drugs” so that the country “is safe again.”
Trump also praised Noem in his message for having “served well” the country and obtaining “numerous and spectacular results.” “She will become special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, our new security initiative in the Western Hemisphere that we will announce on Saturday in Doral, Florida,” he concluded.
According to the press, Trump would have made his decision after Noem’s hearings in Congress, during which he found himself in trouble over the award of an important public contract.
