Australia beats Taiwan at the start of the 2026 World Baseball Classic

He World Baseball Classic 2026 began this Thursday with a solid victory of Australia over Taiwan 3-0 at the Tokyo Dome, in Japan, before more than 40,000 spectators who filled the stadium for the first game of the tournament.

The Australian offense made the difference with two key hits. Robbie Perkins opened the scoring with a home run that put his team ahead, while Travis Bazzana extended the lead with another home run that ended up securing the victory in the opening game of the championship.

The meeting officially raised the curtain on an international tournament that brings together 20 national teams and will be held in various venues around the world.

A complicated group in Tokyo

Australia and Taiwan are part of Group C, which also includes two international baseball powers: Japan, the current tournament champion, and South Korea, as well as the Czech Republic.

All matches in this group will be played in Tokyo, making the Tokyo Dome one of the epicenters of the championship during the initial phase.

Japan, led by Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, will make its debut on Friday when it faces Taiwan, in one of the most anticipated games at the start of the tournament.

A global tournament

The World Baseball Classic is held with venues in Japan, Puerto Rico and the United States during the group stage. Later, the action will move to Houston and Miami, where the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the tournament will be played.

With Australia’s victory in the opening match, the tournament has already begun to offer excitement and confirms that the road to the world title promises great confrontations between some of the best teams on the planet.
