Hollywood actress Salma Hayek is producing a film that aims to correct what she believes is a false image of Mexico. “This project is extremely important at a time when we are being morally attacked and our image is being conveyed in a completely wrong way,” said the Mexican on Sunday at an event to support the domestic film industry, which was also attended by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
It is important to regain “control” over the narrative in order to “say: This is Mexico, not what they are selling you,” said Hayek, without naming US President Donald Trump, who repeatedly makes defamatory statements about the neighboring country and its residents.
The film, whose title has not yet been announced, will be shot in Hayek’s home state of Veracruz and the state of Quintana Roo – both in the southeast of the country. According to local media, US actress Angelina Jolie will play the lead role.
