Trump publishes customs letters to six other countries

US President Donald Trump has informed the governments of six other countries in writing about customs surcharges between 20 and 30 percent. Trump published in his online service Truth Social Writing on Wednesday to the State Leaders of the Philippines, Bruneis, Algeria, Libyans, Vltava and Iraq. The surcharges should apply from August 1st. Trump had already published letters to 14 other governments on Monday.

In the letters that are almost identical to those on Monday, Trump announces tariffs of 30 percent for Algeria, Libya and Iraq. Customs of 25 percent should apply to Moldova and Brunei, and 20 percent of the Philippines. Trump wants to send similar letters to other trading partners.

The US President had sparked the trade conflict in early April. Trump initially announced high imports for the EU and numerous countries, but lowered them to a base rate of ten percent after violent reactions to the financial markets. At the same time, Trump announced a 90-day “break” for negotiations that should actually run out on Wednesday. The President extended this deadline on Monday until August 1st.
