The Europeans are relieved. The worst of the 28-point plan that has been circulating since last week appears to have been avoided. Friedrich Merz and Co. have cleverly maneuvered their way back to the negotiating table when it comes to Ukraine and are now pushing for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin not to dictate peace to Kiev.
One of the sensitive points: Which areas does Ukraine have to cede to Russia? The original plan called for Putin to even be awarded areas beyond the current front line. There is no longer any talk of that. Instead, the Europeans’ proposal is circulating to freeze the conflict at the current contact line – and to use this as the basis for the negotiations. A suggestion that sounds familiar: The then SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich wanted this as early as March 2024 – and was publicly insulted as a friend of Russia for it. Where does the change come from? The starPolitical leaders Veit Medick and Jan Rosenkranz discuss the Europeans’ course in Ukraine. In five minutes – because we don’t have forever.
