The anniversary of the attacks was overshadowed by the fatal assassination attempt on the right -wing activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot on Wednesday at a discussion event on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem.
US President Donald Trump used the national commemoration of the terrorist attacks 24 years ago to appreciate Kirk as a “giant of his generation” and “advocate of freedom”. The 31-year-old Podcaster was considered an important supporter of the President and as his mouthpiece for the youth.
Trump also announced in a ceremony in the Pentagon to honor Kirk after his death with the highest civilian award in the United States, the President Medal of Freedom (Presidential Medal of Freedom). US defense minister Pete Hegseth said that Kirk, like the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, would “never be forgotten”.
US Vice President JD Vance canceled his participation in the memorial celebrations in New York. Instead, he wants to travel to Utah to meet Kirk’s relatives there.
24 years ago, 2753 people in New York, 184 at the US Department of Defense in Washington and 40 in Pennsylvania, were killed in the four-hized aircraft 24 years ago. The attacks shaken the United States to the mark and had the world power dragged in a “war against terror” in a decades.
